Bacon Chase: When Satire Becomes Reality

There's a new race coming to Chicago this summer:

The Bacon Chase
It's a race dedicated to... oh, you guessed it already: bacon.

There's UNLIMITED bacon along the course and UNLIMITED bacon at the finish line. And a Bloody Mary.

Sounds pretty sweet - obviously not healthy at all since a 5K only burns about 300 calories but still, sounds good.

But the part where satire becomes reality is that along with the 5K course there is also a .05K course. For real. .05K. That you sign up for, officially. That's pretty funny. Except that The Onion invented the .05K two years ago to make fun of Paula Deen. And now fake news creates real events.

Excerpt from The Onion:
"This .05K walk may be one heck of a challenge, but it's for such a good cause I'm darn sure gonna finish it."

I can just imagine people saying that on the morning of June 7th in Montrose Harbor. I'll probably hear them say it. Because I'll be there. Eating ALL THE BACONS.

The Race With the Slip 'n Slide Opens Today!

You guys.

The Race With the Slip 'n Slide (also known as the BTN Big 10K) just opened for registration today. According to the BTN website (and my own eyes before, during and after the race last year), 13,000 people ran last year. This year they're expecting even more - in fact they're expecting it to sell out.

So, even though I'm from Texas and even though the only exposure I have to the Big Ten is through this race, I am telling you that this is definitely worth registering for before it sells out. If you're part of the Big Ten I'm sure you can find all kinds of things about this race to love: representing your school, overcoming rivals on the course, partying at the tailgating party afterwards, but if you're like me, the only thing you need to know about this race is:

IT HAS A SLIP 'N SLIDE IN THE MIDDLE OF IT

Important side note: the first 1,500 who register get a one-gallon tin of Garrett Popcorn. I think you can even carry the tin with you during…

Fresh Foam 980 Review (and Event at New Balance Chicago)

Head's up: there's an event at New Balance Chicago Lincoln Park on Saturday morning featuring a showcase of the new New Balance Fresh Foam 980s and it sounds pretty sweet (especially because of the free food and chance to win free shoes). I've been testing these shoes out since Friday (all inside, like the treadmill runner that this winter has made me become) and I have to say that I'm pretty into them.

There's all kinds of scientific stuff that the folks at New Balance can tell you about this shoe (with plenty of marketing language mixed in as well, obviously) and you can learn even more by trying them out for yourself after a quick run Saturday morning during New Balance Chicago's event (they're also offering 15% off on these during the event). If you're interested in getting more info on these shoes you should definitely look into both of those things, but I'm still going to give you my opinion (based on no scientific inquiry at all) and you can …

Chicago Fire Looking for Extras for Running Episode

Yesterday I talked to this guy named Cole - he does the extras casting for "Chicago Fire" - and they're working on a pretty big episode that will crossover between "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago PD." Extras work? Meh. BUT - the cool thing is that it is centered around a running event!

So even though I don't know anything about either of these shows, the idea of an episode (or multiple episodes, actually) centered around a running event made me pretty excited so I signed up (even though I'm out of town for a week of filming, which might mean I can't do it anyway).

Cole asked that I spread the word on my blog so here it is (you can also follow the link above for all the "Chicago Fire" extras casting calls, but here's the info on the running extras specifically:

Crossover show Casting Alert! Searching for males and females, who can dress like runners and can run for our crossover scene (you won't be running long distances, j…

Running in the Single Digits

Once again we're heading into a weekend where the temperatures are not just sub-freezing, but dipping down into the single digits. Although part of is a little disappointed that I'm not running Universal Sole's latest Trail Challenge in Willow Springs tomorrow morning, part of is a little glad that I don't have a car and everyone I asked wasn't available to drive out there. Because it's going to be cold again tomorrow morning and my house is going to be way warmer than a trail run. Still, if you're planning to head out there, I'd still take a ride - because 4-5 miles in the woods in 10 degrees is still somehow appealing to me.

Seriously, if you're running this race and have room for someone to bum a ride - let me know.Otherwise I'm hitting up the nice, warm treadmill at the gym this weekend.
