Bacon Chase: When Satire Becomes Reality

There's a new race coming to Chicago this summer:

It's a race dedicated to... oh, you guessed it already: bacon.

There's UNLIMITED bacon along the course and UNLIMITED bacon at the finish line. And a Bloody Mary.

Sounds pretty sweet - obviously not healthy at all since a 5K only burns about 300 calories but still, sounds good.

But the part where satire becomes reality is that along with the 5K course there is also a .05K course. For real. .05K. That you sign up for, officially. That's pretty funny. Except that The Onion invented the .05K two years ago to make fun of Paula Deen. And now fake news creates real events.

Excerpt from The Onion:
"This .05K walk may be one heck of a challenge, but it's for such a good cause I'm darn sure gonna finish it."

I can just imagine people saying that on the morning of June 7th in Montrose Harbor. I'll probably hear them say it. Because I'll be there. Eating ALL THE BACONS.

Warrior Dash or It's Not Always About Speed

My parents were in town this weekend from Texas. We rented an I-GO (actually, even better than that, I won the WEGO 10 monthly competition for 10 free hours with an I-GO, which was very sweet) and drove out to Channahon, Illinois for the Warrior Dash. This was my first "mud run" and I was pretty excited about it, because I've been creating an image of the mud run in my mind as a pseudo-hardcore fun run. I would say that I still feel that after running it, but I think now I see it as intentionally not hardcore. They're asking people to have fun, not to kill themselves.

My full review is up at Newcity - I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I expected, but most of that was just based on seeing it in a different way. This isn't really a run for runners. It's a run that tricks non-runners into thinking running is fun. More on that later (like several weeks from now later, not like later in this blog post).

Anyway, I ran with Brynn, and we made sure to take our req…

Tough Mudder Chicago - Fun in the Mud

Two years ago, after reading about the growing popularity of mud runs, I signed up for the Warrior Dash. And while I ended up being disappointed at the relative easiness of the course, I also ended up having a great time and getting a clearer understanding of why these races are so popular: they're so much fun.

This weekend I headed out to Richmond, Illinois for the Tough Mudder Chicago (no, it's not in Chicago... or even Chicagoland). I was joined by my friend Logan, who decided to take a break from doing easy sports all the time to try a sport that actually requires some intense training and skill: running.*

*Immediate follow-up to anyone who does jiu jitsu: I am joking. Please don't hurt me.

Anyway, we met up with our other team members in a Super 8 parking lot and made all kinds of pre-race plans, including how we were going to get to the race, meet each other and check in and whatnot... did a team circle hand-raise thing and then drove to Country Thunder to park.

And…
